SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — The Illinois Senate has rejected a two-year property tax freeze. The Democratic offer to meet Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner's demand for tax relief for local homeowners is one of the measures that is part of the "grand bargain" budget compromise. Disagreements between Democrats, who control the General Assembly, and Rauner has kept the state from having an annual spending plan for two years.
 

 

(Mahomet-db) -- A junior at Mahomet Seymour was killed in a multi-vehicle accident last evening near Tuscola on Route 36.  In a letter to the staff at Mahomet-Seymour High School, Superintendent Rick Johnston said a “support team is preparing for extra support at the High School... and the grief dogs will be there as well.” The crash is being investigated by the state police, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and Douglas County Coroner’s Office.

The USDA offers many safety-net programs to help producers recover from losses as well as through the federal crop insurance program. CHICAGO (AP) — Department of Children and Family Services Director George Sheldon says he's considering a change in how the agency conducts abuse and neglect investigations. Sheldon told the Chicago Tribune investigators could benefit from access to records of past unproven allegations. DCFS currently expunges and shreds files if the agency determines there is no credible abuse or neglect evidence.
 

 

(Springfield-jm) -- Legislation to extend the repeal of the tuition affordability discount program at Eastern Illinois University from 2022 to 2026 has passed both the House and Senate. The program will allow EIU to waive 10% of available undergraduate tuition revenue, which the university would then cover. Eligible students receive $2,500 toward tuition each year for up to four years. State Representative Chad Hays of Catlin talks about the legislation…

(Bement-jm) -- Piatt County residents needing food assistance can go to Bement on Saturday, June 10th. The Eastern Illinois Foodbank will hold a food giveaway from 10 to 11:30 at the Bement Fire Station on S. Sangamon St. Those attending are asked to bring bags or boxes to transport food.
